How To Build A Skincare Routine For Beginners

How To Build A Skincare Routine For Beginners

Skincare is no joking matter—actually, it’s pretty serious business. Social media is flooded with new products and trends weekly. From 30-stepped regimes to an overwhelming amount of products to choose from, it’s easy to get confused, and skincare can look like a daunting task.

And after a long day girlbossing, it can be hard to make time for your skin – especially when all you want to do is climb right into bed and get your beauty Z’s. But you’ll find that the benefits of taking care of your skin are totally worth putting in the extra work.

Skincare goes beyond keeping up with the latest trends, or doing it to take cute pics for the ‘gram. To build a quality skin care routine that truly works for you must know your skin type. If you’re not sure about how build a routine that suits for your skin type, here’s a beginner’s guide to building the perfect routine!

How to Figure Out Your Skin Type

Dry Skin

If your skin is prone to flaking, cracking and peeling, you probably have dry skin.

Oily Skin

If your skin is constantly on the shiny side, it's producing an excess of sebum, the skin’s natural oil. The excess oil can cause enlarged, clogged pores and breakouts. (Check out our post on oily skin myths!)

Combination Skin

Combination skin is when two or more defining characteristics, like dry and oily, are apparent. It is common for this to occur in different areas.

Sensitive Skin

Does your skin get irritated and inflamed easily? Constantly have to tiptoe around which products you apply to it? If so, you probably have sensitive skin.

Normal Skin

Normal skin refers to well-balanced skin and doesn’t show any concern.

What Products Do I Need For My Routine?

Every skincare routine should have these three core steps in common. Here are the basic products important to any skincare routine, regardless of your skin type.

Step One: Cleanse your face in the morning and night

This is the most basic step which lifts the unwanted gunk that builds up on your face throughout the day. A good cleanser should clear excess oil, remove pore congestion, and lift the other impurities on the surface of your skin (makeup residue, dust and other nasties) without stripping your skin's moisture away.

Our favourite way to achieve thoroughly cleansed skin without drying our skin out is by using an effective yet gentle cleanser like our Deep Pore Cleanser.

Step Two: Restore hydration with a moisturiser

Quench your skin by hydrating it regularly. Moisturising is a vital step in the skin care regime (yes, even for oily skin), so don't skip it! Choose a moisturiser suitable for your skin – if you have oily skin, go for a lightweight formula; if your skin is on the dryer side, opt for a heavier cream.

Our Hydration Boost Cream not only deeply hydrates the skin, its formula also contains key ingredients which help your skin retain moisture and prevent water loss by strengthening your skin barrier. It contains Hyaluronic acid, a powerful water-binding agent – read our post on how to use HA like a pro!

Step Three: Protect your skin from UV rays with sunscreen

Consistent sunscreen use helps prevent premature aging. If you’re in your 20s and 30s, you might not think this is important just yet – but it’s never too early to start on preventative measures. Applying daily SPF helps prevent the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, textural imperfections, and uneven pigmentation. At the end of your morning routine, lotion up!

"So I'm done with my basic routine... what do I do from here?"

Once you find products that work for you and have gotten comfortable with your routine, you'll be ready to add more products according to your skin type and its unique needs. Here are some additional products you can add into your regimen to give your skin the boost it needs!

Mask up according to your skin concern

Depending on your skin concern, you can add a mask to your routine (after cleansing, before moisturising!). We also see an occasional face mask as a little self-treat – a way to help you unwind and slow down at the end of a long day. You can add this little treat to your routine 2 to 3 times a week.

If your skin is feeling dry and dull try out a deeply quenching mask like our Intense Hydrating Mask. Fun fact: this one can also be used as a sleeping mask or an alternative to that slugging trend all over TikTok. If you're feeling lacklustre and are dealing with wrinkles and pigmentation from sun damage, try our Super Bounce Mask. Rich in glow-giving Vitamin C, its antioxidant powers and ability to speed up cellular turnover makes it a perfect mask for dealing with damaged and tired-looking skin.

Clay masks are a great addition to your routine if what you're dealing with is related to congestion. Our Pink Clay Porefining Mask takes deep cleaning to a whole new level – it clears up congestion clogging your pores instantly, and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores. If excess oiliness and acne is what's bothering you, try our Clearing Face Mask, which contains prebiotics and powerful actives to give you a clear, healthy and balanced complexion.

Give your skin extra nutrients with serums

Serums amp up your routine by providing a solid dose of active ingredients. They’re like magic potions specially designed to be a power-up step – 4 to 6 drops is more than enough. For dry skin try adding our Splash Serum to your routine; and if you're going for a megawatt-glow makeup look, pop Dreamy Glow Drops on as skin-prep.

    The Bottom Line

Now that you know where to start, it’s time to get started. The key is to start with the essentials, then customise your routine accordingly.
