How to Get Rid of Strawberry Legs for Good!
Ever stepped out of the shower and examined your thighs or calves to see little smatterings of red spotty marks all over? Hmmm, you wonder. Was that a shaving mishap? Water too hot again? Rogue rash? Well, it could be a skin phenomenon known as ‘Strawberry Legs’.
Seemingly rosy name aside, Strawberry Legs (SL) – or 'chicken skin' to some –can be a real nuisance when you want to flaunt a new dress or bike shorts for a workout. While nobody on the face of this earth can have perfectly-textured, airbrushed limbs seven days a week, we’ve jotted down a few tips (and Sand & Sky rituals) to help calm and soothe the skin:
What causes Strawberry Legs?
SL is usually characterised as dotted or pitted red (and sometimes black) spots that look a little bit like strawberry seeds (hence the name). They’re harmless but certainly frustrating to spot when you’ve spent an hour in the bathroom prepping for the *ultimate* Thursday Tan Night.
SL usually comes from clogged-up pores or hair follicles, also known in science terms as comedones. It can also be down to something called Folliculitis (translation: damage to the hair follicle that allows dirt and bacteria to enter during shaving or other abrasion to your precious skin) or even dry skin. Dryness can cause a thing known as Keratosis Pilaris, meaning tiny red bumps on skin.
How to Clear Strawberry Legs in 3 Simple Steps
Here’s our three-pronged pamper schedule to soothe and smooth misbehaving skin:
Tip #1: Exfoliate your skin
A no-brainer but an often missed step in our skincare routines is dedication to using exfoliators. Exfoliating with a body scrub regularly removes dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores and hair follicles from cellular buildup. Keep it gentle and low-tempo to avoid irritation or inflammation, exfoliating in syncopation with some Taylor Swift perhaps. Reach for our Australian Pink Clay Smoothing Body Sand in the shower to detox, purify and prep your skin. This delicious, botanical-based body scrub was made to gently exfoliate and give the gift of radiant, spot-free limbs.
Tip #2: Use a moisturiser
Once you’re all scrubbed up and towel-dried, it’s time to slather yourself in some serious moisture to protect that skin barrier and banish dryness for good. Our Tasmanian Spring Water Wonder Body Lotion is a heroic hydrator, cooling and cocooning skin in non-sticky moisture. Three types of Hyaluronic Acid help reinforce skin barrier, whilst organic-certified Aloe Vera supports skin renewal and repair. The organic-certified Tasmanian Sea Kelp has been found to improve overall skin appearance by 60% in 12 weeks.
Tip #3: Keep your skin cool and calm
Skin impacted by SL tends to be easily irritated or sensitive, so it’s a clever move to stay vigilant with regular top-ups of your body lotion post-shower and between washes. Ensuring what’s inside that body lotion though is what really counts. This is where our Tassie Water Wonder Lotion’s ingredients list shines. It’s as soothing for the skin as Sex and The City re-runs for a breakup. Opt for cooling, calming products for strawberry legs containing the good stuff, like Wonder Lotion’s three types of Hyaluronic Acid for max-moisture and nourishing Aloe Vera - the ultimate skin repairer.
